19 Mar

Every 2-3 months this past year I’ve traveled back to Portland, Oregon, where I grew up, to visit family & do photography shoots.  I’m back this month for my little sister’s baby shower, for one of my best friend’s baby showers, and of course plenty of shoots!  It’s wonderful being able to take these trips back to do photography and also getting to see my family, but it’s definitely a hard balance of work, play & rest!  Thank you all to my clients in both Denver & Portland for your patience as I travel & it takes me a a few days longer to get your photos to you because of being out of my home base. :)  Today is the day of my sister’s baby shower, so I gotta get rollin’ on wrapping gifts & making food!

We met Seth & Christi at the conference we went to a few weeks back for NFL Players & their wives, and WHAT.AN.ADORABLE.FAMILY.  seriously.  Their son Rylan is the most precious little bundle of sweetness I’ve ever seen.  And check out all their baby blues!  It was so fun to meet another couple who were once with the Denver Broncos & are now with another team (Vikings,) but loved Denver so much they made their home here also! :)

And of course their family pictures had to include their other “kids”!  Meet Copper, Charlie & Boomer:

Thanks for the wonderful day Olsen Fam!!

trash & treasure

7 Mar

I heard an amazing illustration from a speaker recently; Danny Wuerffel, who was a Heisman Trophy winner as a quarterback from the University of Florida, played 6 seasons in the NFL, then retired in 2003 & moved to the the Upper Ninth Ward in New Orleans to work with Desire Street Ministries (, focused on serving some of the poorest of the poor in our country.  Then Hurrican Katrina happened in 2005, and along with all of their neighbors, the Wuerffels lost everything.  When they returned to start gutting houses, Danny said he remembers looking up & down his street, and all he could see were these empty shells of homes, with their muddy, destroyed contents in gigantic piles along the road.

All he could think about was how, just a couple of weeks earlier, all of this trash, including the pile in front of his own home, had been someone’s treasure.  And literally in what seemed like the blink of an eye it was all turned to worthless garbage.  Even his “precious” Heisman Trophy.  It was devastating, but he said in that moment, he was thankful that everything that truly mattered to him the most on this earth- his wife, kids, and close friends & neighbors- were there by his side.

Why am I sharing this?  And what does this have to do with photography??  I write this as a public reminder for myself & for others of the message from Luke 16:9- “Here is the lesson: use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends.  Then, when your earthly possessions are gone, they will welcome you to an eternal home.”  I know that the photos I take won’t last forever.  My goal as a photographer is not to try to convince you of all the huge, fancy prints & products you should buy to clutter your home.  Do some of those things have an appropriate place in your home?  I believe they can.  But I hope the purpose behind them is to 1) display the genuine love captured in those photos, and 2) to encourage others by the loving example your family lives by.  My parents, for example, have a huge wall in their living room covered with the wedding pictures from all 5 of us kids.  And in the center of those photos is a large sign that reads “FAMILY: All because two people fell in love.”

What are the most important things in your life?  I hope they are your family members, and I hope you continually pour everything into their lives.  That’s what I want to capture with my photography.  I believe it’s so important to use our material possessions & talents to bless others & strengthen relationships, otherwise they are completely meaningless & when they’re gone, they become useless trash.  This is why I so love generational photos, and photo gifts for grandparents or parents… it’s a thank-you & a “I love you more than words can say” for the years of sacrifice & love they have poured into you.

It’s photos like these that make me choke up because of the significance behind them: (these are from a shoot awhile back with our dear friends Ryan & Lisa, (and their little angel Lorelai,) who recently moved to San Antonio to be closer to family, and we miss them terribly…)

All because two people fell in love. :)

I met Reagan in one of my photography classes awhile back, and we just instantly clicked.  She’s also a redhead, passionate about photography & food, and so easy to carry on a conversation with.  She’s got THEE most infectious smile & laugh I’ve ever seen.  Unfortunately about 8 months ago she moved quite a bit further away, so we haven’t seen each other for quite awhile & it was fun to catch up while I captured some uber fun & sweet moments between her & the men in her life.

One of her sons slipped on the snow & needed a little TLC… but a piggyback ride made it all better!!

Thanks for a wonderful day Geddes Family!!

I heart giving

4 Mar

Oh happy day!  (yes, when Jesus washed my sins away!  But also these joyous times when I get to let the blessings He has given me pass THROUGH me!)

This last weekend my husband & I attended an amazing conference in Orlando, FL by Professional Athlete’s Outreach, for about 400 NFL players & their wives.  For those of you who don’t know, my husband has been in & out of the NFL over the past 4 years.  I am so incredibly proud of my hubby, who is THEE most disciplined, driven, integrous, loving, handsome man I know.  Rawr.  Even though it sure has been a roller-coaster ride in the NFL these past two years of marriage, God has been supremely gracious to us & provided for all of our needs & more.

So during this conference, one of the speakers said something that made me think in a way I hadn’t specifically thought of before: “Don’t ask God to give blessings TO you, until you’ve told him how they will pass THROUGH you.”  I know all of you have heard it, but maybe didn’t realize this phrase came from Acts 20:35- “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”  So that is my prayer for this year; for my photography business to be a rich blessing to others, because of the blessings the Lord has given to me.  I’ve already started compiling a list of giveaway ideas for this year, including ideas for helping families with their adoptions, military families, families with terminal pregnancies, etc.  If you have any ideas, feel free to let me know!  “Love isn’t love until you give it away.”

NOW on to why I’m writing about all this today…. I’m giving away a FREE SESSION this Monday!!!  To enter, first “like” my Facebook business page “Cashmere Photography,” tag “@Cashmere Photography” in your status letting your friends know you’re entering to win a free session, and then comment on my giveaway post on the page!  ADDITIONAL entries can be made by posting a comment on one or more of my blog posts, and TWO entries for sharing this post on Facebook.  (comment to let me know you’ve done this.)  But those entries will not be counted if you haven’t tagged the page on Facebook & commented on the giveaway post first.

So have fun, and I hope YOU win!!!

I’m here to stay!

2 Mar

Goodness gracious it’s been awhile!  As I’ve been sooo busy traveling (my hubby got a job in DC, so we were there for a month then spent a month visiting our families in OR & CA,) doing shoots, editing, researching & updating gear, getting new products for my clients, trying to figure out this whole world of technology I’m supposed to understand as a photographer…. (I think you get where I’m coming from,) I’ve neglected this blog a bit!  So after a ton of trying new things out & getting this blog redesigned, I’m here to stay!  I feel like I’m finally getting to a place where I can interact with current & future clients more, and not just in reference to scheduling their shoots or mailing their pictures out to them.  Seriously, I gotta holla a thanks to everyone who has been SO supportive of my getting my feet under me, figuring out this business world of photography, and letting me discover my style along the way!  I’m still developing my brand style, so be patient with me, dear friends, but I hope you always love what you see!

My biggest news is that I recently purchased the Canon 5D Mark II (just typing it makes me giddy!) and I cannot wait to use it this weekend for its inaugural shoot!  (Should I bring a champagne bottle….?)  I am LOVING this baby.  In combination with my newest lens, the 35mm f/1.4, I am getting some YUMMMMy shots.  Aren’t you excited for your next session??

Along with my new camera & all the deliciousness it will bring to your session, all of my clients now receive a customized disc in a keepsake case from Loktah Natural Media Packaging.  Check out one of my most recent ones:

As this reminds me of maternity photos…. I’ve decided to do a fun giveaway.  I’ve started producing & selling more of my homemade body butter that I’ve loved for awhile & after my pregnant sisters got hooked & started talking about it, others got pretty interested too!  So for all my clients who get a shoot on the books this month (doesn’t have to take place this month, just scheduled!) you’ll receive a free jar of my wonderful body butter!  ($25 value)  Here’s the deliciousness:

{It is made up of all organic, fair trade ingredients: cocoa butter, coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax, and about 10 other wonderful oils.  Every purchase/gift comes with a full list of ingredients & their beneficial properties.  It comes in an 8 oz blue cobalt jar.}

I’ll be back soon to share some of my recent photography!
